Pretext is an attempt to document the field of creative book making in Australia and NZ. It is not a comprehensive history, but something more akin to a geocaching project. It tries to pull together stories, memories, scraps of writing, resources, and contacts that are relevant or perhaps obsolete but worth remembering.

Every aspect of creative publishing is of interest, from zines to artists’ books and art books through to fine press publishing, and all the processes involved, such as papermaking, printmaking, other forms of printing (photocopy, risography, letterpress, etc), and bookbinding.

Pretext welcomes contributions from practitioners, supporters, collectors and institutions. Contributions could be as simple as sending in details of your guild or group; mailing or emailing old catalogue essays; anecdotes about events, people and projects; or sharing a post from your own blog that would be relevant to this site. Get in touch if you can help.
